NCAE, CMAE leaders urge Governor Cooper, legislators to stand strong, keep working

NCAE and CMAE leaders will join Sen. Jeff Jackson and Sen. Joyce Waddell in a press conference at the CMAE office on Friday, November 8, at 4 p.m. to urge Governor Roy Cooper and legislators to stand strong for public school students and educators, and to continue working toward a better budget agreement. CMAE is located at 4523 Park Road, Suite 102.

CMAE invites members to attend the press conference, to show support, and to urge Cooper to reject the latest scheme proposed by the legislative majority.

NCAE President Mark Jewell has criticized the latest proposal as a "bad-faith" plan, and said that its proponents "continue to prioritize pork projects and corporate tax cuts over our community’s most urgent needs. Our families, our kids, and our teachers deserve a better budget."

The governor's initial budget proposal included an average nine-percent raise for educators, but the legislative majority offered a proposal that included a 3.5% raise. Since then more competing plans have emerged, including plans to raise educator salaries between 6.5% and 8%.

Cooper vetoed the legislature's budget package, and the House overrode the veto in a controversial maneuver on September 11. While Senate leaders have been poised to call for an override vote in that chamber, legislative Republicans have reduced their original pay-raise plan and are refusing to allow any pay raises unless Senate Democrats agree to override the veto.
