American Education Week: November 16–20, 2020

American Education Week honors students’ determination to learn; recognizes the professionalism and dedication of teachers, support staff, and other educators; thanks parents and members of the community who help students succeed; and rededicates the community at large to quality public education for every student.

Monday, November 16: Kickoff Day

Tuesday, November 17: Parents’ Day

Wednesday, November 18: Education Support Professionals Day

Thursday, November  19: Educator for a Day

Friday, November 20: Substitute Educators Day Monday, November

Tuesday, November 10, 2020

Thank You for Your Service

On November 11, America celebrates Veterans Day, an observance first started with Armistice Day in 1919, and then, since 1954, as Veterans Day, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower expanded the focus to include all veterans in addition to those who served in World War I. We offer our gratitude to all military veterans. Especially veterans that have taken the time to serve as educators in our schools after their military careers.

This Veterans Day, I encourage everyone to set aside a few moments to remember and honor those who have served our country in the Armed Forces. Veterans Day offers a chance for reflection on what words like justice, freedom, sacrifice, and resilience really mean. I personally want our veterans and active service men and women, as well as their families, to know how much we appreciate their service and sacrifices.

To veterans and their families, we express our eternal gratitude this Veterans Day, and always.

Don't Just Vote... Volunteer!

CMAE Members,

As the Government Relations Committee (GRC) worked during the summer to sponsor two legislative / elected officials’ roundtable discussions and House and Senate Candidate Interviews for Mecklenburg County, the committee made recommendations on what we believe is a stellar candidates list of new and incumbent candidates.

The GRC Committee believes that our selection of House and Senate candidates represents the best Pro- Public Education candidates throughout the entire state and will serve our students, families, and profession well.  They are committed to bringing change to how North Carolina Legislature treats our students, families, and public education.

We are in the final stretch of the 2020 Elections! Please take a moment of your time to contact any of our endorsed candidates and volunteer to assist in their campaign(s).  Collective ACTION is needed in order to change the direction in which our state is going as it relates to our student’s education, our families health and economic stability and mobility!  IT’S ALL ON THE BALLOT!

Please visit one or more of the candidate’s website below and volunteer!  We also ask that you obtain some of our Apple Cards for distribution at poll locations during early voting and Election Day if you can (Remembering to adhere to campaign distancing and COVID 19 Guidelines). Talk to you neighbors and family members nationwide encouraging them to VOTE! Some of our races for our Incumbents (Wesley Harris, Rachel Hunt, Christy Clark, and Brandon Lofton) will be tight if we don’t get our community out to Vote.  Two additional seats are also expected to be tight (Deandrea Salvdore and Terry Brown).

Please Volunteer Today!  Thank you for all of your engagement in this most important process. In the words of the late great Congressman JOHN LEWIS, “Let’s get into some good trouble!”  Let’s get all of Mecklenburg out to vote (early, absentee, or on November 3rd).   Justice, Fairness, Economics, and Health is all on the Ballot!

Our Labor Must Include Racial and Social Justice

For some, Labor Day signals the end of summer, the change in weather, and a long awaited three-day weekend with family and friends. For us, we know Labor Day means so much more. Labor Day celebrates the contributions, struggles, and achievements of workers. Our educators work every day to create safer spaces for our students.

The labor movement is more important than ever during these challenging times. Essential workers, including educators, are expected to go out when everyone else is expected to stay inside. There's an expectation for our schools to save the economy when most districts haven't recovered from the Great Recession.

The hardships many faced prior to the pandemic have been exposed and have come into focus during Covid-19.  Many families have lost jobs, are underemployed, or are worried about possible unemployment.

CMAE continues to advocate for great public schools for all students and we are focused on electing candidates who understand the value of strong public schools. However, our commitment must remain broader than that. In addition, our advocacy must address issues that pertain to racial and social justice by building racial and social justice into our daily work. We know that when our society is more just, our communities are stronger, our schools do better, and our students succeed.

Thank you for the opportunity you have given me to serve as President of CMAE and thank you especially for all the work you do to make both our public schools and our association one of the strongest in the nation.

Enjoy today, and have a great weekend!

Join Your CMAE School Leadership Team

Dear Member,

I am writing to specifically invite you to serve as part of the Association Representative team at your school. Our roster of Association Representatives indicates that members at some schools do not have a full team of representatives. To be as effective and responsive as possible to the needs of members at your school, CMAE needs a full team there, and I hope you will consider participating.

Association Representatives make it possible for us to reach and keep our members informed.

For example, we’ve sponsored events for early-career educators, delivered simultaneous series of trainings in professional development and leadership development, and changed the venue of our monthly Representative Assembly to allow for greater participation by more members. At the same time, we’ve expanded our communication methods and increased their frequency to keep all CMAE members apprised of important news and upcoming events.

This is why it is important.

CMAE is a member-driven organization. Its officers and board lead CMAE’s day-to-day work, but its monthly Representative Assembly is its highest governing body. The Assembly is made up of all the Association Representatives chosen to represent members at every school in the district. For that reason, CMAE’s Association Representatives drive the decisions and direction of CMAE. As one of your school’s Association Representatives, you will be a vital link between CMAE members and our association.

In addition, CMAE will sponsor several events in the coming months, and Association Representatives can help to keep our members informed.

CMAE is tentatively planning a Fall Training for Association Representatives. More details will be forthcoming, but we expect to include components on NCAE/NEA member benefits, a review of CMAE governance, the roles/responsibilities of Association Representatives, and an overview of opportunities, programs, and services available to members through CMAE/NCAE/NEA.

If this opportunity appeals to you, or if you know a CMAE member at your school who can and should fill this role, please complete the Association Representative Form.

As always, thank you for the work you do to strengthen CMAE.

Sincerely,

Lawrence Brinson
President

CMS/CMAE Equity Committee Survey

Hello! CMAE members,

We do our best to serve and advocate for our communities, schools, students, parents, and profession as educational leaders. By advocating, we use our voices to equitably change policies and procedures which affect all of us as citizens and educators.

By completing and sharing the survey we can assure our voices are heard as it pertains to having equitable representation on PTA’s, PTO’s, PTSA’s and concerns in our schools. After the deadline on July 17th, we (the committee) will meet to analyze the data and proceed with the next step(s).

Thank you CMAE - You are proof that WE will ALWAYS be greater than me.

Dear CMAE family,

I just want to take this opportunity to thank you and our amazing CMAE Leadership Team for an incredible membership year. These past few months have been hard. You and our colleagues have had to transition from normal practices to remote learning, setting up new lesson plans, devising and recording instructional videos, preparing materials, and finding new ways to check in on and connect with our students. In addition, all of you have done this while juggling the effects of COVID-19 on your own family and personal lives as well. I have seen firsthand the challenges you have faced.

Moreover, you have achieved great things despite the hardship. I have been watching and hearing about your incredible efforts, great innovations, new practices, and the new partnerships you are forging as you work to provide for our students. You are using existing resources in new ways and developing practices that will provide future benefits. Moreover, many of you are stepping up to support our wider community as well.

Regardless of your position or title within the association, our work is 100 percent volunteer and performed outside our normal day to day duties with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. You could have easily given up or taken a step back. However, you moved forward without asking for anything in return.

While there have been many challenges and are more still to come, I am impressed by and grateful for your efforts. I am extremely proud of the work we have done this year. You are proof that we will ALWAYS be greater than me.

Thank you for your membership, your voice, and your commitment to education.

Message from the President - We Must Stop Racial and Social Injustices

Dear Member,

Along with many of you, I have spent the past few days absorbing the news of protests over the killing of George Floyd. George Floyd's death followed the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and the traumatic Central Park situation with Christian Cooper. Remember, all of this is happening in the middle of a global pandemic that has had a disproportionate impact on people of color and those already marginalized prior to the start of Covid 19.

We are heartbroken, frustrated, and angry. Many have said changes are coming. Yes, words and policies matter. However, actions speak more truth than words. We must break this cycle and work to end systemic racism wherever it exists. It is important for each of us, regardless of our backgrounds to ask, what is my role in this system, have I been a passive bystander, and how can I change that?

The Charlotte Mecklenburg Association of Educators has and will continue to fight for racial and social justice. We invite you to join us for upcoming conversations to highlight ways you can take action. (Dates TBD)

Thank you for your membership, your voice, and your commitment to education.

CMAE Introduces Early Career Learning Labs

The Early Career Learning Labs (ECLL) are a blended learning environment meant to support early career educators  around instructional and classroom problems of practice (ECEs are teachers within the first five years of their teaching career). The ECLL Program is a collaboration between the National Education Association and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Association of Educators. Membership not required to participate in our ECLL.

ECEs will...
1. Discover: Identify a problem of practice
2. Engage: Share ideas with a national teaching community
3. Learn: Engage in deep learning around a problem of practice
4. Teach: Apply new knowledge techniques with your students
5. Reflect: Share experiences and refine teaching strategies
