A grant has allowed CMAE to develop and host a "Leadership Development Academy," a series of eight training modules on five dates during the next three months. The schedule of dates, and a description of each training module, is found below. Each module in the series will only be offered once under this grant.
PLEASE NOTE that the first of the five training dates is this Saturday, October 19.
Because of material costs associated with some of the modules, participation is limited to 25 CMAE members. (Additional NCAE members will be invited from other local affiliates.)
We hope you'll participate, but seating is limited. Please click here to register and indicate your commitment to attend the training dates. The eight modules are part of a total training package, and those members who are able to attend all five of the training dates will earn a certificate that reflects your completion of the CMAE Leadership Development Academy. However, please register to attend any dates that you commit to attend, and we will extend invitations to other members to ensure that we get maximum participation and meet the grant's objectives.
The trainings will be delivered in the Media Center at Kannapolis Middle School, 1445 Oakwood Avenue, Kannapolis. Each training date will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude by 1:30 p.m., and lunch will be provided.
Content to be covered in each of the modules includes the following:
TRAINING DATE 1: OCTOBER 19, 2019
POWER & THE THREE CULTURES (2 hrs)
Power has positive and negative definitions, connotations, and uses, but its exercise falls into four categories or "dimensions." Individuals respond to, and engage with, power in many different ways, but organizations build and exercise power through three specific structures or cultures. Leaders will recognize the utility, strengths and limitations of each of the three cultures; recognize the experiences of fellow educators with different dimensions of power; and identify sources of power in their organization.
TRUE COLORS (2 hrs)
Correlated to principles of psychology, as defined through history from the ancient Greeks to modern research in personality and psychological type, True Colors represents a distillation of these concepts, in a presentation that's easy to understand and apply in personal and professional life. Regardless of age, leaders will realize truths about themselves and others that can enhance their self-efficacy as leaders and educators.
TRAINING DATE 2: OCTOBER 26, 2019
EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE (4 hrs)Emotional intelligence affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make decisions to achieve results. It encompasses skills in the twin primary competencies of personal competence and social competence. Measured against 33 other workplace skills, emotional intelligence is strongest in predicting performance: the foundation for critical skills that impacts what people say and do, and that directly affects one's lifetime earning potential. In addition to the training content, leaders will receive study materials to foster daily improvement of their emotional intelligence.
TRAINING DATE 3: NOVEMBER 9, 2019
VALUES & INTERESTS (2 hrs)
Individuals and organizations have core beliefs about themselves and their purposes, and core principles that are unshakable and unchanging over time. At the same time, individuals and organizations adopt goals and objectives that reflect their beliefs and principles, but that may change as circumstances and priorities change. Leaders will identify and define their own personal and organizational interests, and the connection between the two; connect organizational values and interests with their own, and fellow educators', values and interests; and connect their individual values and interests to individual and collective actions.
ORGANIZING STRATEGICALLY (2 hrs)
Organizational growth, rooted in organizational values and interests, builds organizational power. Organizing people to achieve collective goals is a ongoing process of managing and overcoming challenges by building relationships, knowledge, and skills. Leaders will identify internal and external factors that impact organizing; analyze organizing dilemmas, identifying choices and consequences; learn about theories of change that incorporate resources and goals to plan for organizational success; and design tactics that engage and energize members while applying pressure to decision-makers.
TRAINING DATE 4: NOVEMBER 23, 2019
NARRATIVE, STORY, & ONE-TO-ONES (4 hrs)
People share knowledge and build relationships through story-telling, a skill that relies upon a specific structure. Shared stories lead to shared awareness of mutual interests, which both inspire and facilitate progress toward collective goals. Leaders will articulate and share their own compelling personal narrative/path to leadership; conduct effective one-to-one relational meetings; and apply a strategic framework to engage in effective one-to-one organizing conversations.
TRAINING DATE 5: DECEMBER 7, 2019
WORKSITE & POWER-MAPPING (2 hrs)
Power is everywhere if one knows how and where to find it. Effective pursuit of organizational goals requires knowing the organization's environment, and recognizing individuals and organizations who either support or oppose one's own success. Leaders will use power-mapping tools to analyze relationships within worksites and the community; and identify allies and opponents when developing and implementing a campaign.
DATA, TRANSACTIONS & TRANSFORMATIONS IN ORGANIZING (2 hrs)
Efforts to build and use power, to define organizational values and interests, to develop strategic plans to achieve collective goals, to build relationships, and to map the centers of power in an organization's environment, yield many different kinds of information. To become effective, and to maintain organizational effectiveness, requires that leaders understand how to collect and use data
